If an employee is on paid 'no safe job leave' during the 6 week period before the expected date of birth, the employer can ask the employee for a medical certificate stating whether they are fit for work. If the employee doesn't give the employer a medical certificate within 7 days after the request, or they provide a certificate stating they are not fit for work, the employer can require them to take unpaid parental leave as soon as practical (if they are eligible). The 'no safe job leave' ends when the period of unpaid parental leave starts.
